History

MONMET: Power. Precision. People.

Founded in Montreal in 1988 as a small entrepreneurial company, Monmet has grown into a global player in specialized engineering and consulting for heavy industry, thanks to strong people skills, uncompromising quality standards and a passion for improvisational problem-solving.

Monmet works in close cooperation with a worldwide group of partners, manufacturing an extensive range of components for the Mining, Cement, Pulp & Paper, Wood Processing and Power Generation industries.

President and founder Mark Cahill has a family history in the metals business stretching back over 100 years. His great-great-grandfather was a foundryman and molder. In 1919, his grandfather and great-great-uncle were recruited expressly from Massachusetts to build and operate the new foundry of the Dominion Engineering Works in Lachine, Quebec. And his father, Maurice Cahill, worked for Allis Chalmers in Lachine throughout its many incarnations. Upon his retirement after 40 years of service, the company had become part of the Metso group, now one of the world’s largest manufacturers in mining, cement and pulp & paper.

Mark Cahill brings an old-school self-made approach to forging business relationships, with the accent on the second part of that term: relationship. The Monmet team was groomed with that philosophy: that a reputation is created one handshake at a time, that people are the foundation of every contract. In a corporate world overflowing with clichés, Monmet is that rarest of organizations: a family.

Monmet’s custom-designed office loft, inspired by Cahill’s original design, is an expression of that thinking: the elegant, expansive yet functional space empowers our team to think innovatively, embracing new ideas and technologies, while remaining faithful to the fundamentals: quality and performance that meet or surpass industry standards.

And the Monmet space is more than an office: with a passion for military history, Cahill has collected an impressive, museum-quality array of memorabilia and artifacts from World Wars I and II, housed in Monmet headquarters. At Monmet, passion, pursuit of excellence and attention to detail aren’t just the company guidelines. They’re on permanent display.

MONMET. The Gold Standard in the metals business.
